Mandurah Bowling & Recreation Club: November 28 to 30, 2011
Path of glory
The National Champion of Champions event is steeped in rich heritage, not unlike this year's host city of Mandurah in Western Australia where it is poised to ignite later this month (28/10).
First staged in 1913, the event is returning for a second consecutive year after being on hiatus for a five year period from 2004 and will once again pave the way for a club champion to advance through the state and national levels to be crowned world champion.
The winners of the singles events will pull on the green and gold for Australia at the 2012 World Champion of Champions in Cyprus, and if successful, earn the ultimate reward of being crowned 'Champion of Champions'.
Australia has had great success at the World Champion of Champions, with world number one Leif Selby, world number four Brett Wilkie and women's world number four Kelsey Cottrell all saluting on the international stage in recent years, with world number three Aron Sherriff claiming the honours last year at Norfolk Island.
In the women's event, Australian captain Lynsey Armitage will enter as the player to beat.
The 170-game international veteran knows what it takes to perform on the sport's grandest stage, but will have to contend with the likes of NSW's Jan Agar and Western Australia's Noelene Abe, who is in the unique position to contest both the women's singles and pairs events, providing twice as many opportunities to etch her name onto the silverware.
Tasmania's Mary Beaumont and the Northern Territory's Arlene Foley both boast obvious claims, while SA's Kerry Treloar and Victoria's Sandra McColgan cannot be discounted.
Staged on a rotational basis, the National Champion of Champions will be held from October 28 to 30 at the Mandurah Bowling & Recreation Club before heading to the ACT in 2012.
