Joyce Lindores’ bid for a sixth world lawn bowls title has suffered an early setback on Norfolk Island following a tie-break loss to Malaysian whiz kid Zuraini Khalid today (24/3).
Having made a successful debut for Australia yesterday, clinching her opening round encounter against South Africa’s Esme Steyn in straight sets, the former Scottish superstar was unable to repeat the dose as Khalid posted a 6-8, 8-6, 2-1 victory in trying conditions.
Despite the loss, Lindores has little time to dwell on the result, with a round three blockbuster against the host nation’s Carmen Anderson scheduled for tomorrow.
World number seven Aron Sherriff will also resume his campaign against Scotland’s Allister Reid after enjoying a rest day thanks to a round three bye.
The news appears brighter for Australia’s Claire Duke and Anthony Kiepe at the Asia Pacific Merdeka Indoor Championships in Kuala Lumpur with the pair on track to qualify in all three disciplines.
Despite enjoying a stop-start campaign, Duke and Kiepe can move through to the quarter-finals of the mixed pairs with a final round victory over the Philippines’ Ainie Knight and Emman Portacio later this evening.
