Tension filled the Gigantium in Aalborg before the Group A clash between Romania and Denmark.
And the Danish supporters managed to put lot of pressure on the Romanian team, which in the long run built the foundation for their team’s first victory against their opponents in the past five years.
The match started perfectly for the hosts. A strong middle defence with Mette Melgaard and Rikke Skov stopped the Romanian attack very efficiently.
In combination with fast breaks and goals from a long distance by Line Jørgensen and Lærke Møller, the Danes were in lead and in control of the match.
But the Romanians came back into the game with some brilliant moves made by left back Cristina Neagu, nominee of the IHF World Player of the year 2010.
Within only three minutes, coach Radu Voina’s team managed to equalize.
The game was tight and extremely spectacular for a long period in which both teams were looking for the decision.
And it was Romania that found the best solutions in attack and managed to take the lead and save it into half time.
After the break, the two goalkeepers Karin Mortensen and Paula Ungureanu both showed high class, together with Neagu, top scorer of the match with nine goals, who impressed with her game play.
The hosts tried to surprise with their wings, and Augustensen and Nørgaard (Danish top scorer with 7 goals) scored important goals.
That was the moment the Danes took back control over the game. With an incredible eight goals in a row, Denmark left their opponents behind with six goals, 23:17 after 48 minutes.
The story was written, Romania was unable to come back and Denmark won 25:22.
With this victory coach Jan Pytlick’s team qualified for the Main Round of the EHF EURO 2010.
