Bedford Ladies & Girls FC First Team win the County Cup
Sunday saw the finals of the Ladies County Cup. It was a clash of the godesses as Luton Town Ladies were defending their title of 2013 against Bedford Ladies. This is the third year each of these Clubs have met in the finals, with Bedford having taken the title in 2012 so it was never going to be an easy match. There is a huge amount of respect between these Clubs as both share the same ethos and principles of developing players from a young age through to openage.
First blood was to Luton who pressed hard and were on the attack scoring an early goal in the first half. It was one of the youngest member’s of the team, Chloe Scott, ‘Scottie’, who lead the comeback for Bedford with a goal on the rebound and this was followed by a second goal from Becca Vass. For much of the rest of the match it seemed to be going Bedford’s way as they finished the first half 2-1 up and went into the second half with the advantage. Bedford continued to defend well but a late goal by Luton levelled the score and the match ended at 2-2. This meant It then went to the dreaded and nail biting penalty shootout. For the Carroll family It was a particularly tense and excruciating match to watch as two of their daughters were playing, Zara Carroll for Luton Ladies and Shannon Carroll for Bedford Ladies. Lauren Webb, the Bedford goalie, coached by goalie coach, Howard Fisher, then came into her own making two amazing saves and Bedford won 5 penalties to Luton’s 4.
We are very proud of the whole of the Bedford Ladies Team, managed and coached by Peter Thornes, and Captained by Tasha Fensome as they are a young side and we are pleased to say the majority have come through our youth system. We take and develop girls from as early as 7. We will be holding trials Monday 19 and 26 May and Thursday 23 and 30 May at Westfield Middle School grounds, Chester Road from 6-7pm for 7-13 year olds and 6:30-dusk for 14s and up.
