Gold medalists Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, Calif.) made the talk show rounds after Beijing, with appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Good Morning America, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show. The duo appeared with Letterman on Aug. 27 while Oprah’s “Welcome Home Team USA” featured more than 175 Olympic Games medalists and aired on Sept. 8.
May-Treanor has also been practicing hard for her upcoming appearance on the seventh season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” May-Treanor will be paired with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, a Ukrainian-born 28-year-old professional dancer who is a veteran of the show. The season premiere is scheduled for Sept. 22.
May-Treanor will also play herself in an upcoming episode of The Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.” The episode air date has not yet been announced.
Walsh has made numerous appearances, including a visit to her alma mater, Archbishop Mitty High School. She dedicated a beach volleyball court that was largely funded by her foundation. The school also retired the No. 9 jersey she wore as both a volleyball and basketball player.
On the court, the pair’s incredible 112-match win streak came to a halt soon after the Olympics. At the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout Cincinnati held Aug. 29-31, May-Treanor and Walsh were defeated in the finals by fellow Olympians, Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.) and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.), 21-19, 10-21, 25-23. The loss also snapped the gold medalists’ streak of 19 straight tournament championships. Their last loss also came at the hands of Youngs and Branagh, on Aug. 19, 2007.
