Back on the Podium: Soloist Allison McKenny Wins Bronze at Swiss Open

July 20th, 2007

Only one day after Synchro Canada’s National Junior Team swept the Gold medals from the US Open, B Team swimmer Allison McKenny has Canada back up on the podium this time capturing the Solo Bronze at the 2007 Swiss Open. The Competition began yesterday and boasts an impressive International field featuring teams from five continents. The meet runs through Sunday in Zurich, Switzerland.

McKenny is the 2007 Senior Solo Champion from the Canadian Open this past May, and was excited to test herself in International Competition. The 19 year old Calgarian was pleased with her solid third place finish trailing only Japan and Italy in that order.

Head Coach Susan Kemper notes that “this is the first time the B Team has traveled overseas in four years,” and adds that she is “extremely thrilled to start with success!”

The B Team Duet consisting of Laura McClemont and Karine Thomas competes today, and as Switzerland is six hours ahead of Eastern Time, they have already completed their Tech Routine and currently sit in fourth. They will be looking to improve their score later today with their Free Routine, and have the advantage of swimming 20th out of 21 routines.

The Team Technical event is tomorrow, while the Team Free routine will be on Sunday morning. The Competition concludes Sunday afternoon with a Gala Watershow that features the winners from each category as well as other select routines, and rest assured our athletes will be doing everything in their power to bring some Canadian content to the show.
