The Australian Diamonds began their campaign for Delhi 2010 Gold with a comprehensive 76-39 win over Samoa at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex on Monday.
It was a shaky start for the Diamonds as they made several unforced errors and were punished early by Samoan goal shooter Sepuita Langi's quick passing and accuracy in the circle under the long reach of goal keeper Susan Fuhrmann.
The Diamonds ended the first quarter with a 14-11 lead but lifted their intensity after the break, converting four goals in less than two minutes to push the margin out to seven. The Samoans, led by captain Frances Solia, kept up the fight but had no reply for the Diamonds' speed through the midcourt and hustle in defence.
Holding a 32-19 half-time lead, Diamonds coach Norma Plummer sent in a new-look attack combination which immediately converted a handful of superb pick-ups and rebounds from Australia's youngest player and replacement, goal keeper Laura Geitz.
