ALEXANDRIA (Basketball Australia) - The EuroLeague Women has lost another superstar for at least three months following the news that Australia’s Lauren Jackson has an acute Achilles tendon injury.
The Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje veteran was hurt in a December game.
While Down Under for the holidays, Jackson received an MRI scan on December 31.
After returning to Russia to resume the season, Jackson tried to take part in a training session with her club side but said that she could not move and that there was also swelling.
Jackson said to AAP: "That's when I got home to all these messages and emails from people back in Australia who had seen the scans and said 'you need to come back (to Australia) and start your rehab right away'."
“It is certainly a serious injury, and we will be working to ensure that she gets it right so that she can continue her illustrious career,” Basketball Australia chief executive Larry Sengstock said.
Jackson is expected to be out of action for up to three months but has expressed the hope that she will return and play for four-time defending champions Sparta&K in April if they reach the EuroLeague Women Final Four.
Jackson’s former Sparta&K teammate, Diana Taurasi, last week had her contract terminated by Fenerbahce after the Team USA star tested positive for the banned substance Modafinil.
Taurasi, who made the All-Star Five at the FIBA World Championship for Women last year in the Czech Republic, was the MVP of the last two EuroLeague Women Final Fours while on the books of Sparta&K.
