Women's Singles competition, it was Russia's Valentina
SABITOVA and Poland's Katarzyna GRZYBOWSKA who attracted the attention.
A fine effort by AL-MOHANNADI and likewise Valentina SABITOVA and Katarzyna GRZYBOWSKA excelled.
The former defeated Hong Kong's NG Wing Nam, the second highest world ranked player
on duty in the first phase of proceedings; whilst the latter accounted for the next
in the pecking order. She defeated the host nation's Sara EL-SOKARY.
Defeats for NG Wing Nam and Sara EL-SOKARY but there was success for Russia's Elena
TROSHNEVA and Alexandra PRIVALOVA of Belarus.
Elena TROSHNEVA, the highest female world ranked player on duty in the qualification
stage and Alexandra PRIVALOVA, the fourth highest rated, both completed day one
unbeaten.
Sixteen places are available in the main draw for qualifiers in both the Men's Singles
and Women's Singles events, where each competition commences with ten qualification
groups.The players finishing in first place in each group advance directly to the main
draw, the ten second placed players compete in a preliminary round with the winners
progressing; the one further place goes to a "Lucky Loser" drawn from the preliminary
round losers. A total of 32 players comprise the first round with 16 receiving direct entries.
