Atletico De Madrid Femenino look to kick start campaign at WICC

This year’s newcomer to the 2019 Women’s International Champions Cup (WICC) is Spanish powerhouses, Atlético de Madrid Femenino who are searching for success in the United States of America.

As one of the top teams in the Primera Division and women’s soccer, the club has been able to win the league for the past three years as well as the Copa de la Reina back in the 2015/16 season.

Now, the team will be looking to extend their success beyond domestic competitions and make their mark on the world stage and the journey towards achieving international glory begins with the trip to America.

They had yet another early exit from the UEFA Women’s Champions League after losing 10-0 on aggregate to VfL Wolfsburg in the Round of 16 but that scoreline doesn’t necessarily depict the squad in the right way.

In the domestic league, the team scored an astonishing 96 goals last season and finished the campaign with a goal difference of +77, which helped them edge rival Barcelona to the title by six points.

Leading this dominant attack was Jennifer Hermoso, Esther Gonzalez and Olga Garcia who combined for a total of 49 goals. However with the recent transfer window, only the latter remains at the club.

As a result, head coach Jose Luis Sanchez has brought in new signings to reinforce the club in pursuit of international success.

One of the first is English forward Toni Duggan who will be looking to make a good first impression with her team in the WICC this summer after leaving rivals Barcelona.

Another is Primera Division veteran Charlyn Corral who has scored a whopping 86 goals in 117 appearances for her former club Levante.

Two attacking signings will help restructure this forward-moving squad but Sanchez didn’t stop there. He also signed the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Golden Glove winner Sari van Veenendaal to play between the sticks.
With recent domestic success and the addition of big-name players, the club and their growing fan base will be eager to move their game across the water.

Just this past season, the club broke the attendance record in the Primera Division with their game against Barcelona and a whopping 60,739 fans and supporters all over the world will be looking forward to kick-start their international success in America.

The team’s captain Amanda Sampedro spoke about the WICC’s importance, saying “It’s an honour for us to be able to play this tournament with the best teams in the world. It will be a great experience that will allow us to start the season in the best possible way,” she said.

Atletico Madrid will play against Olympique Lyonnais on August 15th at 5:00 p.m. EST at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in
