| The third race (15km in length) of the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix 2009 on February 14 in Viedma (ARG) brought another victory for Britta Kamrau-Corestein (GER), who now has 3 medals in 3 races after winning silver in Santa Fe (ARG) on February 1 and gold in Rosario (ARG) on February 7. The medallists:
Silver for Uvarova is her second 2009 Grand Prix medal of this colour, after she finished second in Rosario. Likewise, Nunez now has a second bronze, after taking third in Santa Fe. The event took place on the Rio (River) Negro in the Argentinean province of the same name, where Viedma is the capital. Thirty-one swimmers (13 women, 18 men) from 9 nations entered in the race, which was described as very difficult given the natural conditions of the river, including fluctuating currents. There was one in-water start to a course defined by six 2.5km laps of a rectangular circuit. The race unfolded with competitors swimming in two main groups, changing leaders throughout. After the last turn, there were pronounced changes in the positions, with Kamrau-Corestein becoming the lead women. The Grand Prix now goes to Sumidero Canyon (MEX) for the next race on April 18, 2009. |
