Alex Peters, 13, wins Midland championship

Alex, who is the English U13 champion and a member of ELGA’s Select Midlands squad, beat Kym Larratt (Kibworth) 4/3 in the final. The teenager, who plays at Notts’ Ladies, impressed spectators with her confident play and her excellent short game.

In earlier rounds, Alex beat Emilee Taylor (Gainsborough ) 2/1; Portuguese amateur champion Holly Aitchison (Bedfordshire) 4/3; and Helen White (Worfield) 2/1. Helen had earlier defeated defending champion Samantha Birks (Wolstanton), who has just graduated from Manchester University with a first in psychology, and has played very little golf until the last few weeks

Qualifying for the matchplay stages had to be reduced to 18 holes after play was disrupted by a thunder storm, accompanied by huge hail stones which meant the course was white-over for a while.

Leading qualifier and intermediate champion was Sarah Attwood (Gog Magog) who shot 70, one under the CSS. The Enid Wilson Cup for the best junior qualifying score was won by Lizzie Over (Forest Pines) who scored 71. The county team championship was won by Lincolnshire ‘A’  (Emilee Taylor, Gemma Hardie and Holly Clyburn).
