The Australian Women’s Motocross Championship returns to the Albury Wodonga Motorcycle Club this weekend in a two day showdown between the best female motocross riders in Australia.

Riders from all over the country and even one from New Zealand will vie for the number one plate ensuring the racing is fast and furious over five 20 minute rounds.

Local rider Kristy Gillespie is keen to regain the top spot after finishing second last year but expects the competition to be fierce. Current champ Meghan Rutledge is fresh from international competition, after securing a 3rd place in the FIM Women’s Motocross against the best in the world. Meghan has also been competing in the US and was invited to race at the X Games earlier this year.

Proving that distance is no deterrent Kiwi Mel Patterson is pitting herself the Aussies. Mel secured 2nd place last weekend in the NZ champs in her first serious race after recovering from injury.

Adding to the mix is an intimidating team of Western Australian riders headed by WA favourite Jessica Moore who placed 3rd last year. The round trip of over 7000kms show just how dedicated these WA girls are.

Two new riders are also on the radar – racing in seniors for the first time, Mackenzie Tricker and Tayla Jones are sure to provide stiff competition as both have also been racing internationally this year. After the WMX, Tayla heads to the A4DE next week to race enduro for four days.

“The depth of talent at this event is going to provide some great racing” says promoter Fiona Collins. “With so many riders having had the chance to gain experience competing overseas the championship could be anyone’s.”

Racing includes a senior female support class with FMX Queen Emma McFerran joining in, along with the regular support classes including junior girls support.

General admission is from 12:30pm Saturday and 8:30 Sunday. Entry is free.
