The US player defends her title at the Mutua Madrid Open against Maria Sharapova (6-1, 6-4), becomes the first woman to lift two trophies in Spain, reaches a WTA career total of 50 and keeps her spot at the top of the ranking.
Serena Williams successfully defended her crown at the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open taking her 50th title since she began as a professional in 1995. In a final in which the world number one spot was at stake, the US player proved very solid and barely gave Maria Sharapova a chance, as the Russian was defeated 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 18 minutes.
In a one-sided start in the Manolo Santana Stadium, Serena broke the Russian’s service twice to get to 4-0 up, a lead which allowed her to take the first set 6-1.
Sharapova managed to respond immediately by breaking Williams’ serve, but Serena’s answer came when the scoreboard showed 2-3. While in the first set the decisive moment was in the opening game, this time it came at 5-4. On the Russian’s serve the world number 1 demonstrated her strength as she took the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open, 6-1, 6-4 in a little over an hour.
