2021 Women's NBA: Meeting The 12 Teams Representing The League

The National Basketball Association is closing its First Half by mid-March. After that, the All-Star games will follow, which will feature the Eastern and Western Conference's best players. While the basketball community is looking forward to the many games moving forward, another NBA franchise will work out in the next few months.

The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a sporting event intended for women who are in this sport. This year, the schedule of events is not clear yet due to the health crisis, but it looks like it's about to commence anytime soon. It will be the 25th season of the WNBA since it was established in 1996.

This sporting event is represented by twelve teams. Last January 15, the free agency negotiations took place, followed by a signing period on February 1, 2021. Atlanta Dream 

The Atlanta Dream was founded on October 17, 2007, and led by Nicki Collen. This team has accomplished three Eastern Conference titles and is still looking to win their first WNBA trophy. Although they did not make it to the playoffs last season, they have been into the finals three times and showed up in the playoffs nine times out of 12 years. 

Connecticut Sun

The Connecticut Sun has vanquished three Eastern Conference titles since 1999. Last season,  they defeated the Chicago Sky and Los Angeles Sparks in the playoffs to vie for the Semis. But, they fell short against the Las Vegas Aces which ended their winning streak. Connecticut Sun is headed by Curt Miller and is one of the earliest groups to join WNBA. 

Chicago Sky 

Founded in 2005, Chicago Sky had been representing the Eastern Conference in the WNBA. They are headed by James Wade, who had reached the First Rounds last year but was defeated by the Connecticut Sun.  Chicago Sky had accomplished one Conference title since its formation. 

Dallas Wings 

The Dallas Wings is the home of the league's best scorers like Cheryl Ford, Katie Smith, Deanna Nolan, Liz Cambage, and Odyssey Sims. They joined the WNBA two years after it was established. Since then, they tallied four Conference titles and three WNBA championship trophies.

Indiana Fever 

The Indiana Fever was founded in 2000 and has appeared thirteen times in the playoffs out of 20 seasons. They earned three Conference wins and one WNBA title. Like the Dallas Wings, Indiana Fever also houses the premier WNBA players like Katie Douglas, Tully Bevilaqua, and Tamika Catchings.

Las Vegas Aces 

The Las Vegas Aces were one of the top-performing teams last year who showed up in the finals. They faced the Seattle Storm but failed to dispatch them, landing only as the first-runner up. This team is headed by Bill Laimbeer, who has won two Conference titles since its formation in 1997.

Los Angeles Sparks 

The Los Angeles Sparks were also one of the favorites last season but lost to the Connecticut Sun in the Second Round (Single Elimination). Being part of the WNBA for 20 years, the Los Angeles Sparks has appeared in the playoffs sixteen times. This team is headed by Derek Fisher, who has won three WNBA championship titles.

Minnesota Lynx

Tied with the Seattle Storm and Houston Comets, the Minnesota Lynx had won four WNBA titles which is the most in history. They almost made it last year but had fallen short to the Seattle Storm in the Semis. They have accomplished six Conference wins since its creation in 1999. 

New York Liberty 

Founded in 1997, New York Liberty has been into the playoffs fourteen times. The team houses some of the most popular female NBA players like Leilani Mitchell,  Tina Charles, Essence Carson, Rebecca Lobo, Becky Hammon, Cappie Pondexter, and Teresa Weatherspoon. 

Phoenix Mercury

The Phoenix Mercury is one of the earliest teams who made up the WNBA. They have recorded four Conference wins and three WNBA titles.  This team is headed by Sandy Brondello which showed up in the Second Round last season but got defeated by the Minnesota Lynx. 

Seattle Storm 

After winning the WNBA title last year, the Seattle Storm earned four championship wins. Dan Hughes leads the team. Seattle Storm had been dominating the WNBA since they joined the league producing the best players such as Breanna Stewart, Betty Lenox, Lauren Jackson, and Sue Bird. 

Washington Mystics

The Washington Mystics was having a good ride last season but lost in the First Round. They were established in 1998 and earned two Conference titles and one WNBA championship cup. They are headed by Mike Thibault and have appeared thirteen times in the playoffs since birth.

Takeaway

In the next few months, the basketball community expects another WNBA season which highlights another women's basketball story to look forward to. Hence, the twelve teams enumerated above are all set and ready to grapple for the 2021 WNBA season.
