From 25 to 30 November 2008 the qualification Europe - phase 1 - for the 2009 Women's World Championship in China took place. The qualification phase 1 was played in three tournaments (2 groups of six teams and 1 group of five teams).
Group 1 was hosted by the Netherlands in Emmen, group 2 by Montenegro in Pljevlja and group 3 by Poland in Dabrowa Gornicza.

The first ranked team of each group is qualified for the play-off matches (qualification phase 2) taking place on 6/7 June and 13/14 June 2009.
The teams proceeding to the play-offs are: NED from group 1, MNE from group 2, SVK from group 3. The draw for the play-off matches will be held on 14 December 2008 at 12:30 hrs on the occasion of the EHF EURO 2008 in Skopje, FYR Macedonia. More details regarding the draw will be provided in due time by the EHF.
