This event represents a great opportunity for the British Teams to claim medals and prove their international ability in a year that see the World Championships visit the 02 Arena in London in October. The competition format in Milan is exactly the same as it will be in London (Individual All-around and Apparatus Final for Women, without Team event).
The Women’s Team is led by former World Champion and Beijing Olympic apparatus finalist Beth Tweddle (Liverpool) accompanied by British Senior Champion and Beijing All-around finalist Becky Downie (Notts) and British Olympic Team members Hannah Whelan (Liverpool) and Becky Wing (Heathrow).
Adrian Stan, Women’s Technical Director said, “This line up of four gymnasts offers us the most balance and possibilities to achieve the targets we set out for. Beth Tweddle has got real chances to medal on both Asymmetric Bars and Floor whilst we should also not minimize the chances of Becky Downie in the All-around, Vault and Bars; depending on the opposition's performance obviously. With the changes to the code of points in the first year of the new Olympic cycle, normally the European standard won’t be quite as high as at the end of the cycle, nevertheless we except that Russia will be very strong and having seen Romania recently we know they will be very competitive, as will France.”
