England’s women shine – but Australia win the Ashes

The Australians scored a one-point win in the two-day, mixed contest and claimed their second Ashes victory.

After the first day’s play England trailed by two points, but the internationals from the English Women’s Golf Association’s Performance Squad quickly put the team ahead as they led the order in the final day’s singles.

Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale), Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) and Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton) all scored convincing wins and Liz Bennett (Brokenhurst Manor) was only denied her full point on the last when her opponent birdied the hole. But the England men went down 4-2 and the team fell just short of victory.

In the first day’s play, England’s women – who also included Naomi Edwards of Ganton – lost only one of six matches.

England team manager Stephen Burnett commented, “In the end it was the right overall result, the Australian men outperformed our players considerably and deserved their overall victory. Our English women deserve great credit for their performances, they completely outplayed their opponents for the most part but unfortunately we fell just short in supporting them to cross the finishing line.”

Australian team manager Phil Wood said, “It was a great match played in the right spirit. The standard of golf from both teams was phenomenal and the players deserve enormous credit for putting on such a show.”

The England team now look forward to next week’s Australian Amateur Championships with the next Ashes match scheduled for Royal Birkdale in 2009.
