Groundbreaking Golfer is Selection from Record Number of Votes
NEW YORK (October 15, 2007) – The Women’s Sports Foundation will present Lorena Ochoa with its 2007 Sportswoman of the Year Award tonight at its 28th Annual Salute to Women in Sports gala at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. Ochoa was chosen by more than 9,400 voters who logged on to SportsWomanVote.com.
Candidates for Sportswoman of the Year must have particularly noteworthy or career-defining athletic performances over the past year. Ochoa cemented her candidacy when she surpassed golf hall of famer and 2004 Sportswoman of the Year Annika Sorenstam to become the Rolex Ranking No. 1 player in women’s golf on April 23, 2007. She earned her new place in the rankings as a result of her six wins in 2006 and five top-10 finishes in her first six starts of the 2007 season.
