Russia Dominate from Start to Finish to win Women's Relay Gold

The Russian trio of Donata Rimsaite, Anna Savchenko and Svetlana Lebedeva have conformably won gold at the European Championships women’s Relay today in Sofia, Bulgaria.

An estatic Russian team stated: "We are very happy for this gold medal. The team spirit was very high all day and we enjoyed competing together. It was not an easy competition and we really tried our best and the good result came.  The other teams very very strong although they were only 6 on the start. We are leaving with 2 gold medals in team and in Relay and this shows that the future of the Russian girls is very promising."

The Russian’s stayed in the #1 positionfor the entire day, with consistent performances in all 5 disciplines and ended beating Poland represented by Syliva Gawlikowska Katarzyna Wojcik and Aleksandra Skarzynska by 19 seconds in the combined event.

"We are very happy to win the silver" said the Polish.  "We hoped to get a medal and we did it. We had a very good start with Fencing which elevated our motivation for the other disciplines.  The big handicap time with the next team in the combined event made us stress less and we could start the combined event with clear heads. We are all good friends and one supported the other very much"

Freyja Prentice, Heather Fell and Katy Burke representing Great Britain produced a fantastic combined event to move up from 4th to snatch the bronze from the Czech Republic.

"It was a “sunny” day for us" said team GB. "The weather is very warm and this is not the case lately in Britain."

"It was not a perfect day for the team but we are pleased to win the bronze and stand on the podium. We hoped to win an “other “ colour but it was not to be. Even if their were only 6 teams they were all good teams and the competition was not easy.  We are pleased that we go home with 2 Medals as last year we did not win any" concluded the Brits.
