Coaching change for Asian champs

Asian champions Australia have made a coaching change one month out from their AFC Women’s Asian Cup title defence.

Dutch coach Hesterine de Reus has exited as Matildas coach after 15 months in the role.

“After a review by (Football Federation Australia) FFA it was determined that a change in coaches was in the best interests of the Matildas program,” said FFA CEO David Gallop.

Two-time Sydney FC W-League winning coach and former U-20 national team mentor Alen Stajcic has been appointed on an interim basis and will take the team at next month’s eight-team continental championship in Vietnam.

The FFA say a comprehensive review of the Matildas program, including the Head Coach position, will be conducted after the tournament.

Next month’s Asian championship doubles as qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ with the top five teams earning passage to Canada 2015.
