Argentina, Peru women to battle for World Championship ticket

Argentina enhanced their South American Championship Qualifier debut Saturday with a win over Columbia 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-06).

Colombia's Madeylane Montano was the lead scorer of the game, with 14 rallies, while Argentinian stars - Captain Yamila Nizetich and Emilse Sosa - scored 12 rallies each.

The win puts Argentina at the lead of the competition with three points, followed by Colombia with two and Peru with one.

Colombia began the first set with a 5-3 lead, but Argentina quickly recovered to tie the match 7-7. Argentina's women held onto their lead, while Colombia tried their best to recover to 11-7, leading at the second TTO 16-14. The set tied once again at 17-17, but Argentina eventually secured the set 25-21.

Argentina showed improved confidence in the second set, and the women coached by Guillermo Orduna advanced quickly to 6-1, reaching the first TTO 8-3. Colombia could not find the right play to recover the lead, but got to a three point difference in the second set, to put the score 13-10. With a rally by Argentina, they won also this set.

The third set was a different story. The Argentine team obtained the win to keep their hope alive for the FIVB Volleyball World Championship Italy 2014.

Argentina and Peru will battle for that ticket at 21:00 local time Sunday.
