Competing against an illustrious list of coaches including Mark Thompson, Craig Bellamy, Craig Hilliard and Victor Kovalenko, Plummer has been recognised for the exceptional efforts in coaching the Australian Netball Team to victory at the World Netball Championships in Auckland last November.
Since taking the helm of the Australian Netball Team in December 2003, Plummer was thrown the challenge to re-claim Australia’s number one ranking.
After a Silver medal at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games and the team at the crossroads, Plummer has been responsible for giving opportunities to the pool of talented athletes available for Australian selection and implemented game strategies to maximise individual strengths to achieve outstanding team performance.
This was truly the case in November, when Australia defeated arch rivals the New Zealand Silver Ferns at the World Netball Championship to regain the world number one ranking.
Additional highlights of 2007 included victories in the Holden Netball Test Series, Fisher and Paykel Cup and the Tri-Nations Tour of England in May, making the year so incredibly successful for Plummer.
“I am shocked but extremely proud to win this award, particularly when you look at the quality of coaches nominated. Every one of them achieved amazing feats with their teams and athletes and I would like to congratulate them on their accomplishments of 2007,” Plummer said.
“I want to dedicate this award to the whole Australian Netball Team which also includes all of the support staff. Every single one went above and beyond to keep the team goals on track and win the 2007 World Netball Championship. Also to my daughter Brooke who never loses faith in her Mum!!
“Thank you also to Netball Australia, the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport, without their support this would never have eventuated.”
Netball Australia CEO, Kate Palmer believes the award is well deserved recognition for Plummer.
“Norma has had an exceptional 12 months as coach of the Australia Netball Team, culminating in victory at the World Netball Championship,” Palmer said.
“Netball Australia congratulates her on this award, particularly in a field with such a high calibre of nominees.”
