Womens Rugby League Grand Final Day

Brighouse 10 Leigh Miners Rangers 12

Womens Rugby League Grand Final Day
Sunday 14th October 2012
Plate Final
Stobart Stadium, Widnes

By Rebecca Bird

The Stobart Stadium in Widnes hosted the Womens Rugby League Grand Finals day on Sunday and the first teams to take to the pitch were Brighouse and Leigh Mingers Rangers in the Plate Final.

Leigh Miners were the first to get into their stride; Celia Farrimond came within inches of scoring but was held out by resolute Brighouse defence. Leigh Miners continued to pressure, Genna Banks being the next to go agonisingly close only to be held out just short. It was replacement Leanne Johnson who broke the early deadlock as she raced over out wide.

Johnson continued to impress as Brighouse moved the ball quickly centre Zoe Patchett went close but the covering tackle by Johnson halted the threat. Brighouse pushed on and Kelly Darragh went close but couldn't quite ground the ball over the line. Brighouse were able to breach the defence when centre Claire Waldron exploited an overlap to race over and bring the scores level.

Brighouse continued to attack, Wing Anna Simpson made a powerful break down the blind, Brighouse remained patient and moved the ball quickly, Stand-off Emma Hodgson spotted a gap and sped through it to score. Hodgson converted her own try to give a half time score of 10-4 to Brighouse.

Into the second half and Leigh Miners started brightest enjoying the majority of possession and territory, Nicole Gater forced her way over the line in the corner to put her side within two points of Brighouse and keep the crowd on the edge of their seats. Leigh Miners piled on the pressure and full back Rebecca Jewitt was in space out wide but the pass to her was forward and so Brighouse could clear their lines. Leigh Miners Leanne Johnson showed outstanding pace to race close but was halted 20 metres out.

They continued to attack and played through the phases before prop Nicole Gater received the ball on the wing burst over to grab the lead for her side with minutes to go. Despite a final Brighouse attack Leigh Miners kept them out and earned the closest of victories. Player of the match went to Leigh Miners Rangers Leanne Johnson for her outstanding work in attack and crucial tackles.
