Womens Gymnastics-Russia- Champions of the World
42nd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Rotterdam, 16-24 October.
20/11 - Womens Team Final
| |Russia's Ekaterina Kurbatova
In a showdown of gymnastics powerhouses that went right down to the final piece of apparatus, Russia finished as Champions in the Women’s Team Final. The Final Floor routine proved the victorious one, as after a nervy wait Russia were declared the Gold medalists leaving the USA disappointed to be in Silver with China in Bronze
The British girls unfortunately fell curse to the grueling “3 up, 3 scores count” format, with early costly mistakes proving a big barrier to overcome and resulting in the Team placing in 7th. After two falls on Beam, the first piece, the Team sat in 8th place, but re-grouped well. They went on to produce solid Floor and Vault scores to improve their rankings and after the final piece, Bars, where Beth Tweddle scored a mighty 15.733, GBR had accumulated 166.828 points – 7th place.
Hannah Whelan (GBR): “It was a really nerve-wracking experience and after a disappointing start I think it shows how strong theTteam is that we could pull ourselves together and produce some good performances. We have great Team spirit and the scores on Vault and Floor in particular show why we belong in the top 8 Nations in the World.”
