Womens Cricket-ECB appoints Carl Crowe to replace Jack Birkenshaw as England Women’s Assistant Coach

ECB today announced the appointment of Carl Crowe as Assistant Coach to the England women’s team.  The former Leicestershire spinner will take over the position from Jack Birkenshaw who has been in the role for two and a half years.

Crowe, 34, picked up 60 wickets in his 42 appearances for Leicestershire and also played in the Minor Counties Association for Berkshire. Having played for Leicestershire from 1995 – 2002, Crowe returned to play first-class cricket for his home county in 2009 whilst working towards his Level 4 coaching qualification, taking charge of the County under-16 and under-17 sides and working with the England Women’s Academy.

Crowe will take up the role at the end of the month when the team return from Sri Lanka and will work along side Head Coach, Mark Lane. His first task will be to work with players ahead of the England women’s tour to Australia at the end of the year.

Clare Connor, ECB Head of Women’s Cricket, said: “After short-listing a strong set of candidates, we unanimously concluded that Carl Crowe was the standout choice.  He has experience of coaching in the women's high performance environment, is currently completing his ECB Level 4 coaching qualification, and his skill set will be invaluable to Head Coach Mark Lane."

Crowe will take over from Jack Birkenshaw who will continue to work with young spin bowlers at England women’s training camps over the coming months. Birkenshaw was appointed Assistant Coach in 2008 and has been an integral part of the team’s success, which included winning the ICC World Cup and the ICC World Twenty20 in 2009.

Clare Connor continues: “It is virtually impossible to summarise Jack's impact on the players and support staff.  However, the results of the team and the performances of our spinners during that period speak volumes about Jack's influence.  A servant of the game for over fifty years, everyone involved in England women's cricket feels privileged to have had one of cricket's legends in our midst.  We are delighted that we will not be losing Jack entirely as he will continue to work with our most promising young spinners.”

Carl Crowe said: “I’m delighted to be appointed Assistant Coach to the England women’s team and look forward to working alongside Mark Lane. It’s exciting times for women’s cricket with some  talented young players breaking into the England squad. I’m very much looking forward to the challenges ahead and working with the World champions in preparation for the Australia tour in January.”

Jack Birkenshaw said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the England women’s team and feel proud to have shared in the team’s success. I look forward to continuing to work with some of the country’s most talented young players who will no doubt go on to play for England in the future.”
