Defending champions the Czech Republic stormed into the semifinals of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas on Sunday, while fellow former champions Russia and Italy and newcomers Serbia scored 3-2 victories to join them in the final four.
Petra Kvitova gave the Czechs an insurmountable 3-0 lead over Germany with a 67(2) 64 61 win against Sabine Lisicki, winning eight of the last nine games of the match after trailing a set and 4-all. The tie's final scoreline was 4-1.
"I had some trouble with my rhythm in the beginning, but I knew what I had to do and I started doing it in the middle of the second set," Kvitova said after the match. "I'm glad we have three points already. I'm not just playing by myself, I have a team here. I have always enjoyed playing Fed Cup for my country."
Waiting for the Czech Republic in the semifinals will be Italy, who closed out Ukraine, 3-2. With the two countries splitting the four singles rubbers, it all came down to the doubles, and that's when Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci stepped up, beating Olga Savchuk and Lesia Tsurenko, 75 06 61.
