Korea and China top groups in Asian Games women's volleyball

After six days of preliminary round action, hosts Korea and China have surfaced to the top of their respective pool standings at the women’s volleyball competition of the 17th Asian Games.

Korea are top of Pool A, beating India and Thailand before claiming victory against Japan in their last match 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18). In Pool B, China completed the preliminary round with a clean record by beating Kazakhstan, Hong Kong and Maldives before outlasting their last pool rivals Chinese Taipei 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-22).

Korea finished top in Pool A with a perfect record of nine points, followed by Thailand with six points from two win and one loss, Japan with three points from one win and two losses and winless India.

In Pool B, China collected 12 points with a clean win-loss record. Chinese Taipei placed second with nine points from three wins and one defeat, Kazakhstan finished with two wins and two losses and six points, followed by Hong Kong with three points from one win and three defeats and winless Maldives.

India will take on the Maldives on September 26 to decide which team is to enter the quarterfinals.

The fixtures for the quarterfinals, which are scheduled to take place on September 27, are as follows:

Korea (A1) will play against Hong Kong (B4), China (B1) will take on the winner of the match between India and the Maldives (W of A4-B5), Thailand (A2) will meet with Kazakhstan (B3) and Chinese Taipei (B2) is to challenge Japan (A3). The winners will book a place in the top four and the semifinals are scheduled on September 30, followed by the finals on October 2.

China v Chinese Taipei 3-0

China continued its winning streak with a 3-0 victory against Chinese Taipei. This win also put China in first place in Pool B.

After winning two matches each, both teams were aiming to win and go top of the group. China started well, taking a quick lead at 8-6 in the opening set. Chinese Taipei fought hard to bridge the gap. A more consistent performance, however, meant China were able to increase their advantage at 16-11 and then 20-13. Chinese Taipei called for a timeout and won three points in a row. But China kept the pressure on and took the set 25-17.

In the second set, Chinese Taipei displayed determination to take an unexpected 8-1 lead at the first technical timeout, and 16-13 at the second. China did their best to narrow the gap. Chinese Taipei, however, held on to a two-point lead until 24-22, when Li Jing, a substitute in the set, took two crucial attacks to level the score at 24 all. China then went on to clinch the set, with two brilliant consecutive blocks by Yan Ni at 26-24.

China improved their defence with some impressive blocks in the third set, to lead their opponents 8-3.  China’s powerful attacks, especially from Zhang Changning, helped secure a slight lead at 16-14 at the second technical timeout. Chinese Taipei chased, and were only one point behind at 18-17. The confident China players then took control with blocks and fast attacks and finally claimed the set 25-22.

Three Chinese players scored in double figures. Yan Ni, Zhang Changning and Liu Yanhan all collected 14 points. Chinese Taipei also had three players with impressive point tallies, with Chen Wan Ting, captain of Chinese Taipei, leading the scoring chart with 14 points. 

China had a a significant advantage in attacking (43-35) and blocks (13-4). But they made 22 errors, four more than Chinese Taipei.

Hong Kong v Maldives 3-0

The Maldives put in an improved performance against Hong Kong. Their efforts were rewarded by cheers from the spectators, scoring 11 points in the second set and 10 points in the third. But Hong Kong pressed the Maldives with powerful and accurate attacks and claimed the match in three sets 3-0 (25-5, 25-11, 25-10). 

Korea v Japan 3-0

Korea completed a sweep of Pool A as the hosts took only 72 minutes to defeat Japan in straight sets.

The match began quite evenly until 6-6. At that point, spiker Kim Yeon-Koung of Korea took over, collecting ten points in the first set and extending her team's lead to 16-10, and then 21-11. Korea made a quick finish with two strong blocks from Han Songyi. The set ended 25-17.

In the second set, the Korean women stepped up immediately, jumping out to a quick three point lead 8-5. They kept the advantage until 16-10 and the second technical timeout, and won the set 25-16. Kim Yeon-Koung again led the scoring with nine points from attacking and three from serving.
 
As the Koreans returned to the court in the third set, they continued with their strong offensive tactics, putting a large amount of pressure on their rivals, and gaining a sizeable advantage over Japan 21-12. Japan made a 5-2 run to cut the Korean lead to 23-17. But Korea reacted immediately as Nam Jieyoun and Bae Yoona spiked hard to take the third set 25-18.

Korea outscored Japan in attacking (46-23), blocking (8-4) and serving (6-4).

Korea’s captain Kim Yeon-Koung was the best scorer of the game with 26 points, while no players in the Japanese team reached double figures.
