Ennis-Chernova re-match set for Istanbul - One month to go to IAAF World
Indoor Championships
Monaco - One of the highlights of the upcoming IAAF World Indoor
Championships in Istanbul which are set to begin in exactly one month will
be the confirmed re-match between Heptathlon World champion Tatyana Chernova
and defending World Indoor Pentathlon champion Jessica Ennis.
Ennis and Chernova are some of the first few names already confirmed for
Istanbul as Combined Events participants are invited by the IAAF rather than
entered by their National Federations.
The 24-year-old Russian who was also World Junior champion in 2006 achieved
a superb personal best 6880 points to dominate the women’s Heptathlon in
Daegu last summer in what was one of the most intriguing duels of the IAAF
World Championships. Despite a brave effort in the final event and a 2:07.81
800m PB Ennis fell 129 points short in her World title defense in the Korean
city.
It will be another attempt at a title defense for Ennis who 2 years ago in
Doha was in a class of her own as she dominated the Pentathlon with a new
Championships record and fourth performance of all-time with a score of 4937
points. On that occasion Chernova had to be content with third place 175
points adrift.
With Chernova and Ennis having already confirmed their participation, could
Irina Belova’s World Indoor record be challenged? Could we be treated to the
first ever 5000 points Pentathlon in Istanbul?
According to the rules, the IAAF has invited the top 3 male and female
athletes from the 2011 World Outdoor lists with the top 3 male and female
athletes from the 2012 World Indoor lists invited on 23 February. To
conclude the field, the IAAF will also invite 2 male and female Wild Cards
of its choice.
The third female athlete confirmed for Istanbul is Karolina Tyminska of
Poland while the first three confirmed participants for the men’s Heptathlon
are Ashton Eaton (USA), Leonel Suarez (CUB) and Mikk Pahapill (EST).

Monaco - L'un des faits marquants des prochains Championnats du monde en
salle qui se tiendront à Istanbul dans un mois exactement, sera sans nul
conteste, le duel programmé entre Tatyana Chernova, championne du monde
d’heptathlon et Jessica Ennis, championne du monde en salle de pentathlon.
Ennis et Chernova sont les premiers noms de participantes des épreuves
combinées à être confirmés. Elles ont été invitées par l'IAAF et non
inscrites par leurs fédérations nationales.
La Russe âgée de 24 ans, également championne du monde junior 2006, avait
réalisé une superbe meilleure performance à Daegu, l'été dernier, avec 6880
points dans ce qui fut l’un des plus fascinants duels de ces Championnats du
monde. Malgré un ultime effort dans l'épreuve finale du 800 m (2’07’’81)
avec une meilleure performance personnelle à la clef, à 129 points près,
Ennis ne parvenait pas à défendre son titre mondial dans la cité coréenne.
Il s’agira pour l’Anglaise d’une nouvelle occasion de mettre son titre en
jeu, elle qui à Doha, voilà deux ans, régnait sur le pentathlon et
établissait un nouveau record des championnats et la quatrième performance
de tous les temps, avec un score de 4937 points. À l’époque, Chernova avait
dû se contenter d’une troisième place à 175 points d’écart.
Chernova et Ennis ayant déjà confirmé leur participation, le record du
monde en salle détenu par Irina Belova pourrait-il être battu ? A Istanbul,
pourrions-nous être gratifiés de 5000 points en pentathlon pour la toute
première fois ?
Selon la réglementation, l'IAAF a invité les athlètes qui figurent aux trois
premières places des classements mondiaux en plein air 2011 ainsi que les
trois athlètes hommes et femmes qui occuperont la tête de liste des
classements mondiaux en salle, au 23 février 2012. Pour compléter le
plateau, 2 athlètes hommes et deux athlètes femmes bénéficieront
d’invitation à la discrétion de l’IAAF.
La Polonaise, Karolina Tyminska a également confirmé sa présence à Istanbul.
Quant aux messieurs, les trois premiers noms des participants à l'heptathlon
masculin sont Ashton Eaton (USA), Leonel Suarez (CUB) et Mikk Pahapill
