The women's 10m Synchro proved to one of the closest finals on day one of the British Gas National Diving Championships with two pairs within touching distance of each other.

Due to recent injuries two new pairs were formed for this competition. Sarah Barrow (City of Leeds) and Tonia Couch (Plymouth) finished the required rounds with a score of 105.60 while the City of Leeds pair of Rebecca Gallantree and Jenny Cowen had 100.20 points.

Gallantree and Cowen went into the lead in the opening round of the optional dives after scoring 72.00 points on their Front 3 ½ Somersaults piked.

It went down to the final round. Barrow and Couch scored 80.64 on their Back 2 ½ Somersaults 1 ½ Twists piked to win the gold with a score of 317.22.

Couch said: "We're both very happy with that performance considering we were both out with injuries and have only trained once together before this competition.

"We scored 317 which we are really proud of and I am looking forward for tomorrow for my individual competition."

Silver went to Gallantree and Cowen with a total of 313.32 and Lauren Grinstead and Sarah White (Southampton) won bronze with 226.98 points.

Crystal Palace's Rhea Gayle won the gold in the women's 1m Springboard with a total of 255.10 just ahead of City of Leeds' Alicia Blagg.

Gayle scored consistently throughout the final to take her final score and the gold medal. Blagg scored a total of 248.20 to win silver and Chloe Hurd (City of Leeds) took bronze with 247.20 points.

"I am really happy," Gayle said. "After my performance in February and last week I just wanted to come back and prove to myself that I could do it. The plan was to go out and try my best and it went well. I normally get quite nervous before a competition but had some good things in place to create routine and it worked well."
