Local schoolgirl and racing driver Alice Powell has been shortlisted for the 2009 “Women of the Future Awards”. (www.womenofthefuture.co.uk)

The Awards are the most powerful platform in Britain, to celebrate outstanding young women who are transforming Britain for the better and will be held on

November 12 the Marriott Grosvenor Square, hosted by BBC London’s Riz Lateef.

Alice has been nominated for the Young Star Award for women in the 16 to 21 age category. The Awards feature high fliers from organisations such

as IBM, HSBC and JP Morgan. The 2009 shortlist is the most impressive and diverse to date and includes the singers from Wicked – Alexia Khadime & Dianne Pilkington, founder of Pineapple Studios Debbie Moore and tailor Kathryn Sargent.

Alice, who lives in Chipping Norton and attends the Cotswold School near Cheltenham, says: “It’s a real honour to be shortlisted and get recognition. Few women have made it in motorsport and no one has made a real impact in F1 – that is my ambition. I think the time is right, if a girl is out there doing well then more women would watch Formula 1 – it would definitely make it more exciting.”

Alice continues: “I’d like to be a role model for girls entering motor sport. A successful woman in motor sport would be a true ambassador for the sport and women wanting to enter it and do well. I am breaking new ground and would like to do for motor sport what Ellen MacArthur has done for sailing.”

This is the first time the Awards have acknowledged young stars aged 16-21.

In 2009 Alice Powell, aged just 16, became the youngest female driver in the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship, the 150mph single-seater race series which provides a stepping stone to Formula 1.

Competing with the championship winning team Manor Competition who launched the careers of F1 Champions Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen – Alice is definitely in the right place.
