2008 ICSA WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP DAY ONE ACTION

Newport, Rhode Island (May 26, 2008) – Folks enjoying their Memorial Day parades and picnics could hardly have a complaint with the weatherman’s efforts today.  But when the opening round of the 2008 ICSA Women’s National Championship got underway at noon, the blustery conditions that greeted racers were just a hint of what was in store for rest of their day out on Narragansett Bay.  Facing water temps in the upper 50s, air temps in the mid-60s, and a southerly breeze around 10 knots, the racers quickly added foul weather protection and layers for warmth as conditions built over the afternoon to a gusty 25-knot southwesterly that triggered the issuance of a NOAA small craft advisory.

“The conditions were epic,” said John Mollicone, Head Coach at Brown University (Providence, R.I.).  “And both our A- and B-Division sailors handled it very well.”

Mollicone was referring to Brown’s A-Division skipper, sophomore Charlotte Lipshitz (Chevy Chase, Md.), sailing with senior Meris Tombari (Fishers Island, N.Y.), and the B-Division freshman team of skipper Elizabeth Barry (Riverside, Conn.) and Jennifer Adler (Manchester, Mass.).  They have 33 and 23 points, respectively, for a combined score of 56 which placed the Bears in second overall after six races in both divisions.

Brown is currently 14 points behind the Lady Bulldogs of Yale University (New Haven, Conn.) who emerged as the day’s leader after the second set of races.  Yale’s position at the top of the scoring was largely courtesy of junior Kate Hagemann (Marion, Mass.) and freshman Liz Brim (New York, N.Y.) who won three of their six races to lead B-Division with 14 points.  Junior skipper Jane Macky (Auckland, New Zealand) rotated crew between sophomore Marla Menninger (Newport Beach, Calif.) and freshman Sarah Lihan (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) over the course of the afternoon and stands second in A-Division with 28 points.

With one point keeping them from second place, Tufts University (Medford, Mass.) stands third overall with 57 points.  Seniors Kaity Storck (Huntington, N.Y.) and Lyndsey Gibbons-Neff (Rosemont, Penn.) won three races and have the lead in A-Division with 15 points.  Freshman Meghan Pesch (Chicago, Ill.) and senior Meredith Ginley (Franklin, Mass.) chipped in 42 points in B-Division after battling back from a rough first race.

Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.) is fourth overall with 63 points, and the defending champions from St. Mary’s College (St. Mary’s, Md.) are fifth with 67.

New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court is the headquarters for the three-day championship that runs through May 28, with competitors utilizing the Museum of Yachting’s boat basin at Fort Adams State Park for their boat rotations.  Racing is set south of Rose Island and west of Goat Island which offers spectators several vantage points from which to view the action.  New York Yacht Club is the host of the championship – sailed in 420s – along with Brown University (Providence, R.I.) and Salve Regina University (Newport, R.I.).

The Format:  To get to the ICSA Women's National Championship, 18 colleges qualified through performance in their respective conference elimination.  Each college fields a separate A and B division team, and, weather permitting, each division sails eighteen 20- to 30-minute fleet races over three days for a total of 36 races.  A team's final score is determined by the combined results of its sailors in A and B divisions.
