WOMEN ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES
Women on Wheels at The Original Bicycle Festival
7stanes Kirroughtree, Dumfries and Galloway - Sunday 17 May 2009
Women On Wheels - WOW - is an exciting new cycling event aimed at women being staged at 7stanes Kirroughtree Trail Centre, Dumfries and Galloway, on Sunday 17th May 2009 as part of the Original Bicycle Festival 2009. It is a free event for women and girls of all ages, abilities, and cycling genres who want to come along and be inspired, learn and, most importantly, have fun on two wheels!
THEMES OF WOW:
THE SADDLE - Trade stands featuring women's on and off road bikes to buy or to demo (booking essential for demo bikes from Trek and Cube - photo id & credit card/debit card required) and some of the latest cycling gear and products, including Fox, Endura, and Lucozade. The 7Stanes display team will be on hand to wow the crowds with the most exciting and daring Mountain Bike, BMX and Trials displays throughout the day. For those ladies who want to learn more about looking after their bikes there will also be easy to understand bike maintenance sessions on offer all day.
THE COGS - Talks and question and answer sessions by and with inspirational women and role models in cycling. This includes a talk from 71 year old local hero and grandmother of 3, Granny Mave, who successfully completed a 5,500 transcontinental bike ride across Canada from Vancouver, on the West coast, to St John's, New Foundland, on the East, aged 70. Granny Mave raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support and funded the trip herself selling her hand made greeting cards and pictures in and around her local area. Watch the film of her epic bike ride or listen to a talk about her journey. There will also be nutritional advice and workshops from Lucozade, and Lorna Willock of foods4life (www.foods4fife.co.uk); and Marion Gardner will be on hand to offer advice on the alternative therapy of EFT to help overcome fears of biking or any specific aspects of biking (http://www.OpenIntoLife.com/helping-in-sport.html).
THE WHEELS - the biking itself: guided rides and coaching sessions for novice to expert cyclists, both on and off road. (Booking essential and photo id required for Intermediate and advanced coaching sessions). There will also be Taster Loop Guided sessions and a Skills Area where riders can hone their skills on a grassed area before they set off on the many way marked graded trails Kirroughtree has to offer.
WOW is being organised by Clair Scaife and Sam Hill from thebreakpad bike shop based at Kirroughtree. Clair Scaife said: 'We felt that it would be a great idea to have an Original Bicycle Festival event that focused on females, whatever their age, cycling experience and fitness level; an event that would get women on their bikes and cycling the many off road trails and road biking routes available throughout Dumfries and Galloway. Our aim for Women on Wheels is to ensure that everyone has fun, learns something and we all share the experience with like minded people within a relaxed atmosphere.'
