Lucy Hutchinson from Southampton made a winning start to the British Open women’s Real tennis Championships, at Seacourt Club, Hayling Island, surviving some tense moments in the opening set as she defeated the gritty Doris Siedentopf 6-4 6-1, then partnering Hazel Dunn to an entertaining doubles victory over Siedentopf and Margaret Wareing. Jo Crerar was too strong for Sarah McGivern but now faces a tough task against Manchester’s Aldona Greenwood, the sixth seed. Hutchinson takes on local favourite and former world doubles champion Alex Garside from Hayling Island, seeded 5.
A win for Garside would give her a quarter-final berth against US number 1 Freddy Adam, the 4th seed, and a possible repeat of the upset she staged against Adam two years ago en route to the final. World champion Charlotte Cornwallis plays her opening match on Thursday as she bids for a Grand Slam of major titles. Cornwallis, who already holds the French, Australian and US crowns is tipped to meet rising star Claire Watson, seeded 8, for a place in the semi-final.
