|PARK CITY, UT (Sept. 19) - USSA club jumper Nina Lussi (Lake Placid, NY) is on a mission: to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated for Kids by winning the 2008 Sports Kid of the Year contest the publication is hosting. She is off to a good start as one of 10 finalists selected from more than 6,000 nominations. The final decision is based on fan selection. Vote now for Lussi and ski jumping at http://www.sikids.com/sportskid/index.html. Voting closes Monday, Sept. 22 at noon ET.|
Lussi, a 14-year-old ski jumper out of the New York Ski Education Foundation, was highlighted by Sports Illustrated for Kids for winning the 2008 Junior National Ski Jumping Championships at Junior Olympics in Ishpeming, MI last March.
While she was on skis at the age of three, at eight Lussi decided she wanted to try ski jumping and it appears to have been a good choice. Now, six years after her first jump, Lussi is recognized as a top athlete in her age group.
"It wasn't too scary to watch her because she was in an alpine program before so I knew she was a good skier," said Martina Lussi, her mother. "I think she loves the aspect of flying the most."
Her competition for the Sports Kid of the Year award includes 10-year-old skateboarding twins Nic and Tristan Puehse, 15-year-old fencer Katharine Holmes and 7-year-old hockey, soccer, baseball and basketball player Derek Andrews.
Give Lussi and ski jumping your vote now at http://www.sikids.com/sportskid/index.html. Voting closes at noon ET on Sept. 22 and multiple votes are allowed.
