COLORADO SPRINGS (2016 Rio Olympics) - United States players will gather at the University of Connecticut for a minicamp this month as part of the national team's preparations for the women's basketball tournament at the 2016 Olympics.

Coach, Geno Auriemma will put 16 of the 25 finalists for the Olympic roster through their paces 21-23 February in Storrs, the city where he has held the reins of the NCAA's UConn Huskies since 1985.

Three-time NCAA champion Breanna Stewart, in her final year at UConn, is one of the many players in the USA women's setup to have played for Auriemma in Storrs. She will be among those at the minicamp.

Because of the different schedules our players and coaches work under, we don't have a lot of time to be together, so this three-day training camp becomes a vital part in our preparations. This is a good opportunity to train and help us prepare for Rio. - Auriemma

"It gives us a chance to take a look at some of the returning players that didn't take the trip to Europe last fall and to continue to look at positions for the future," Auriemma said. "It gives the (selection) committee an opportunity to see where everyone is physically and how they fit in."

Eleven players took part in a 10-day European tour last autumn with the USA and played against Italy's national team, and three clubs. The minicamp has been set up while there is a break in European club action. Many of the United States players compete professionally on the old continent.

Finalists for the Olympic squad expected to be in Storrs include Seimone Augustus, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Elena Delle Donne, Stefanie Dolson, Brittney Griner, Jewell Loyd, Kayla McBride, Angel McCoughtry,Maya Moore, Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Danielle Robinson, Stewart, Diana Taurasi, Courtney Vandersloot and Lindsay Whalen.

Diana Taurasi (USA) won her third Olympic gold in London

Bird, Catchings and Taurasi are hoping to play at a fourth consecutive Olympics. Each was gold medal winners in 2004, 2008 and 2012.

Augustus played on the last two Olympic title-winning sides while McCoughtry, Moore and Whalen helped the Americans capture gold four years ago at the London Games.
