USA triumph for Cheshire’s Laura Jones

Cheshire’s Laura Jones has rounded off her first year at university in the USA by helping her team win a top college title.

The 18-year-old from Royal Liverpool was a key member of the Oklahoma City team which won the women’s championship of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for the fourth year in a row. Laura was also picked for the all-tournament team.

Oklahoma City finished three shots clear of the field at Lake San Marcos Country Club, California. Laura was ninth overall and was her team’s top scorer on the final day with a 79. She was one of only nine players, in a field of 120, who broke 80 in a day of harsh conditions of steady rain and gusting winds.

Laura was twice the Cheshire girls’ champion and the winner of the Leveret Trophy before starting her university career. She made an immediate impact – two months after joining Oklahoma City she won her first tournament.   She’s a past member of an English Women’s Golf Association birdie squad and of the regional Select North squad.
