English students Abbey Gittings and Nicole Whitmore have helped their university complete a hat trick of national titles on the US women’s college circuit.
The team from Nova Southeastern University, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, won the NCAA Division II championship for the third year in a row – and in record style. They recorded the best-ever score, both for the first day and for the 72-hole championship – and won the title by 28 shots at Allendale, Michigan.
Abbey, from Walmley, Warwickshire, was third in the individual table, beaten only by two team-mates. She finished on one-under par with scores of 70, 70, 71 and 76 on a wet and windy final day. Her third round included a hole-in-one on the 145-yard 17th.
In the regional qualifier at Lakeland, Florida, Abbey was second individually with scores of 73, 76 and four-under 68. Nicole was 36th in both events.
Abbey, who has just completed her second year at university, had her first win on the college circuit this spring. She was Warwickshire champion three times before starting her studies in the USA.
