SAN ANTONIO (WNBA) – Kate Smith helped fired the United States to a fourth straight Olympic gold medal earlier this summer and now the Detroit Shock sharpshooter looks intent on guiding her club to a second title in the last three years.
The 34-year-old Smith poured in a career play-off high 25 points on Wednesday to lead the Shock to a 77-69 win at San Antonio in the opening game of the best-of-five WNBA Finals showdown.
Taj McWilliams-Franklin, who joined the team from the Washington Mystics during the Olympic break, added 24 for the Shock.
Smith was sensational, with her biggest moment coming at the end of the first half when she had a four-point play.
Game Two is on Friday in San Antonio.
