Uk Sport Supports International Diving Event

Britain is set to welcome the world's very best divers as Sheffield prepares to hold the third leg of the 2009 FINA Diving World Series which promises to showcase many of last summer's Olympic heroes.

The 2009 FINA Diving World Series sees a fourth leg added to the event which will take place in Qatar. Sheffield's Ponds Forge International Sports Centre will play host to the world's top eight divers from 18th - 19th April just three months out from the World Championships.

UK Sport has worked as a partner with British Swimming over the last three years in staging the competition. In 2009 UK Sport is providing funding support of £120,000 from its National Lottery backed World Class Events Programme to support the competition.

Over the 'Beijing Olympiad' (2005-2009), UK Sport invested £5.8 million into British Diving to support the ambitions of the nation's elite divers and their World Class Performance Programme. This has enabled athletes increased access to support while helping to push them forward on the world stage.

This funding, alongside support from Sheffield, the Yorkshire region and its partners, will help towards continuing the legacy programme for the sport and help make this year's event this most successful yet.

Lucy Crickmore, UK Sport's Acting Events Consultant, said: "UK Sport is delighted to be supporting the FINA Diving World Series for the third successive year in Sheffield. Through our National Lottery funded World Class Events Programme we are able to invest up to £120,000 in this competition for the world's top eight divers, which includes an invitation to all the medallists from Beijing.

"As host nation, the UK receives a guaranteed place in every event, offering a fantastic opportunity for our elite divers to test themselves against the very best in the world."

The event has also received support from Sheffield City Council which has helped to host the event over the past three years.

British Swimming's Events and Sponsorship Director Katie Brazier highlights the importance of the event as the national governing body begins its preparations towards 2012.

"We're delighted with the continued support of UK Sport for British Swimming's World Class event programme," said Brazier. "Hosting this World Class event is key to supporting our performance programme aspirations of gold medals and allows our athletes to experience home advantage in the build up to 2012.

"With the support of our partners, UK Sport and Sheffield City Council, we aim to build on the success of the FINA Diving World Series. Hosting international events is a key part of our international strategy building towards the London 2012 Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth Games."
Councillor Sylvia Dunkley, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Streetscene at Sheffield City Council, said: "Hosting the FINA Diving World Series is an important part of Sheffield's sporting calendar. The city is a world class destination for sporting and leisure activities, attracting top performers from all over the world in varying sporting disciplines. Pond's Forge has excellent diving facilities, and we are proud to host the world's best divers there in April."
