UCI MTB Marathon World Championships Villabassa/Niederdorf

Opening Ceremony

The World Championships will officially be inaugurated on Friday, 4th July 2008 at 8pm. For this reason a big stage is specially constructed right in the centre of Niederdorf/Villabassa. The ceremony starts with a parade.

At the beginning the traditional brass band of Niederdorf/Villabassa plays a few pieces, then the representatives of the five tourism associations of Hochpustertal/Alta Pusteria, namely Sexten/Sesto, Toblach/Dobbiaco, Innichen/San Candido, Prags/Braies and Niederdorf/Villabassa enter the scene. The representatives of the authorities and the former World Champions are escorted on horse-drawn carriages through the streets and lanes of the WCH location.

Then the folk dance ensemble “Außervillgraten” from East Tyrol perform some traditional dances in front of the audience, the athletes and the authority representatives. Next there is the children’s appearance on their bikes with the flags of the participating nations. Planned is among other things the appearance of former World Champions, such as Gunn-Rita Dahle, Thomas Frischknecht or Massimo de Bertolis, who will make short statements.

In the background their most important successes will be projected onto screen and the organizing committee will hand them over a present. The official speeches are held by the president of the Italian Cyclist Union Renato Di Rocco, a UCI representative, the member of provincial government for tourism and mobility Thomas Widmann and the mayor of Niederdorf/Villabassa Johann Passler as well as by the Chief of OC Kurt Ploner. The opening ceremony is broadcasted on the big screen on site with three TV cameras.
