COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 21, 2008) – The U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team defeated Netherlands 3-2 (25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 15-6) on Friday at the Sky High Athletic Center in Crystal Lake, Ill.
The victory gives the United States a 3-1 record in its four-match exhibition series against Netherlands around the Chicago area.
Team USA and the Netherlands are preparing for the Paralympic Games on Sept. 6-17 in Beijing. The U.S. Women are the defending Paralympic bronze medalists from 2004, when the Netherlands won silver. Both teams will also be playing at the first World Organization Volleyball for the Disabled (WOVD) Intercontinental Cup on April 22-30 in Cairo, Egypt.
"Tonight was the last of our four scheduled matches and it was great to see the support of the clubs in the Great Lakes Region,” U.S. Women’s Sitting Team Head Coach Mike Hulett said. “There were two reasons to bring the team here to Chicago: First, to beat the Dutch, 2004 Paralympic silver medalists and 2006 world champions, which we did three nights in a row. The second was to raise the awareness in the area about sitting volleyball and the other 24 Paralympic sports. We've accomplished both goals.”
