Jelena Jankovic & Ekaterina Makarova are through to round three at the AEGON Classic while 6th & 7th seeds Mona Barthel & Christina Mchale are out.
Fifth seeded wild card Jankovic was stretched by her British opponent Mel South but came through in a 6-1, 7-6(3) scoreline to set up a meeting with Casey Dellacqua.
Dellacqua put paid to another British wild card as she defeated 19 year old Tara Moore 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Court 1.
There was also smooth progression for the 8th seed Ekaterina Makarova who came past Sesil Karatantcheva (KAZ) 7-6, 6-3.
However there were two seeds to fall in the first matches of the day as Christina Mchale, the American 7th seed, lost a close fought match with Elena Vesnina, beaten 6-1, 1-6, 7-5, and sixth seeded Mona Barthel went down 7-6, 6-2 to Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic.
