The Netherlands thrash Great Britain in Rotterdamn

Maartje Pauman 22 (PS)

Jonker 37 (F)

Eefke Mulder 46 (F)

Maartje Pauman 54 (PC)

Great Britain 0 (0)

In a repeat of yesterday’s pool game The Netherlands started strongly, pinning Great Britain back into defence. In the sixth minute Anne Panter received a yellow card and while GB were down to ten The Netherlands opened the scoring when Pauman netted a penalty corner in the ninth minute.

GB had to defend for long periods of the half and with Mel Clewlow not available through injury they lost Rachel Walker with a broken nose. Kate Walsh then had to leave the field injured after defending a penalty corner in the 22nd minute; the resulting penalty stroke was scored again by Pauman to give the Dutch a two goal lead.

With ten minutes of the first half remaining GB started to press forward but found it difficult to penetrate the Dutch circle. In the 28th minute GB had their best chance from their only penalty corner of the half, when Crista Cullen’s flick flew over the bar.

The Netherlands added to the score within two minutes of the restart, Jonker pouncing on a loose ball in front of goal to place it past Beth Storry. From that moment on the half belonged to The Netherlands; Mulder made it 4-0 having run into the circle to score, and Pauman completed her hat-trick with a trademark flick into the top of the net from The Netherlands’ sixth penalty corner of the game.

After the game Assistant Coach Karen Brown commented, “The scoreline properly reflected the balance of play but if you had told us before the tournament that we would play The Netherlands twice and win one and lose one we would probably have taken that. It is all part of a steep learning curve and shows we’ve still got some way to go to achieve our goals”.
