Tamsyn Lewis to follow in Cathy’s footsteps at Stawell

Tamsyn Lewis will attempt a ‘Cathy Freeman’ at this year’s Australia Post Stawell Gift carnival.

Lewis, the world indoor 800m champion, will be the headline act in the women’s events at Stawell this year and she will attempt to follow in Freeman’s Olympic year footsteps when she tackles the Endura Sports Nutrition Lorraine Donnan Women’s 400m Handicap,

In 1995, Freeman produced the first of two stunning wins off scratch at Central Park over 400m. But in an even more impressive effort, the following year Freeman survived a number of checks between the Hall of Fame and the finishing straight to clamber over the field to produce a remarkable victory just four months before she went on to break her own Australian record with a superb 48.63 seconds in winning silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

Freeman’s Stawell heroics were voted by the Stawell Athletic Club as the fifth best performance in 125 editions of the Carnival during the 125th celebrations in 2006.

Starting as the backmarker in the 400m Endura Sports Nutrition Lorraine Donnan Women’s Handicap, Lewis will begin from scratch and will give up 9m to her nearest competitors and 60m to the limit markers. Fellow Beijing bound Olympian Madeleine Pape and New South Wales’ Trish Greaves, who finished 5th in the national 400m final, both have 9m. National 400m hurdles champion Lauren Boden is also in with a chance with a mark of 10m.

Last year’s 400m winner Tara Gleeson from Langwarrin has 42m after winning from 51m in 2007.

Lewis, who has shown career best form this season, producing a personal best performance over 400m at the Australian Championships in Brisbane in March and then going onto to conquer the women’s 800m IAAF World Indoor Championships last week, is in great shape to achieve the same result.

The 400m Endura Sports Nutrition Lorraine Donnan Women’s Handicap heats are run on Sunday, 23 March whilst the final will be held on Easter Monday, 24 March.

Also currently entered in the Provincial Victoria Strickland Family Women’s Gift, Lewis and her coach/brother Justin Lewis are wary of her Olympic preparations and will wait until Thursday to make a final decision on whether she will compete in both events.

Her current mark of 4m for the Provincial Victoria Strickland Family Women’s Gift, puts her right in the mix for the $6,500 first prize packet alongside former Olympic skeleton aspirant athlete Nicole Apps (0.5m), two-time Burnie Gift winner Melissa Kay (0.75m) and 100m ACT champion Melissa Breen (1m).

Last year’s Driscoll McIlree and Dickinson Fashions on the Field winner, Billie Jo Peterson will run off 6.5m. Last year’s winner Bronwyn Anderson from Keilor will start of 6.75m after racing to victory from 10.5m twelve months ago.

The Provincial Victoria Strickland Family Women’s Gift heats are run on Saturday, 22 March whilst the semi-finals and final will be held on Easter Monday 24 March.
