STEEP LEARNING CURVE FOR BRITISH TAEKWONDO TEAM IN BEIJING

The Great Britain Taekwondo Team today returned from Beijing after having competed in the 2007 WTF World Taekwondo Championships in the Chinese capital. The five day event, which finished yesterday, provided the young team with vital experience as they look forward to the Olympic Qualification Event in Manchester later this year.

The Great Britain Team was hindered by 2005 World Championship silver medallist Sarah Stevenson (All Stars Taekwondo Club, Doncaster) fracturing her hand during competition but she is not considered to be a doubt for Olympic Qualification in Manchester in September.

Gary Hall, Performance Director for the BTCB Sport Taekwondo UK Ltd, commented, “We didn’t get the medals we had hoped for, but some of our performances against top players were world-class. Unfortunately, preparations for the World Championships were hampered by some essential coaching changes which affected the critical final taper of the athletes but I have every confidence that these were for the long-term good of the sport. We will now look to put things right ahead of this September’s Olympic Qualification Event in Manchester. All of our staff and players are fully committed to working tirelessly to ensuring Great Britain is in the best possible position to win medals at next year’s Olympic Games and then at London 2012 and I am still confident we are on course do to so.”

Five of the World Championship Team will still be eligible to fight at the European Junior Championships in October but the team will now focus attentions on qualifying for the Olympics next year in Beijing.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2007 WTF World Taekwondo Qualification Tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which will take place at the MEN Arena in Manchester from 28th to 30th September later this year. This prestigious international event will see at least 182 member nations submit a total of 728 athletes to compete for the right to participate at the next Olympic Games.
