Solid second day at Palma World Cup

In spite of short delays to racing waiting for the wind to build across Palma Bay, Skandia Team GBR’s sailors kept up the pressure once the starter guns were eventually fired.

Helena Lucas, who competed for Great Britain at the Beijing Paralympic Games, advanced into the podium spots in the 2.4mR class, which is being raced at this Princess Sofia Trophy for the first time.

She picked up a race win and a second from her two races on Monday to boost her into the silver medal spot, with teammate Megan Pascoe taking a third and a fourth to see her in fourth overall.

“It was a much better day today,” said Lucas, who ended her opening day of the regatta on Sunday in fourth place.

“I had pretty good speed around the track and was just a bit more on it really. I had my head out of the boat more, got the shifts right and picked the right side – the wind was going left and I was on the left so it was all good.”

After their strong first day, Penny Clark and Saskia Clark hold on to fifth place in the 470 women’s fleet, while a second place race finish in the second race for Hannah Mills and Katrina Hughes turned to disappointment when they were judged to have had a false start.  They’re in 16th place overall, with Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth in tenth.

“On the positive side, we’re getting our kit sorted and I have confidence in us as a team as we’ve sailed together so well before.  We just need time to get some real, proper training in.”

Olympic bronze medallist Bryony Shaw is in fifth place with 5,8 on the scorecard today. Charlotte Dobson is in 25th in the Laser Radial class.

Racing at the Princess Sofia Trophy continues on Tuesday 7 April, with the medal races scheduled for Friday 10 April.
