England Hockey League
It was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show for Slough who having clinched the Womens Premier Division title last weekend, were thrashed 5-1 at Olton for whom Denise Marston-Smith netted a hat-trick. This was not the best preparation for Slough who travel to Paris for the EuroHockey Cup Winners Cup over the Easter weekend. Another hat-trick heroine was second placed Bowdon Hightown’s Tina Cullen who scored three in their 7-4 win over Clifton, where were the defences? Elsewhere action concentrated on the foot of the table.
Poynton, who had boosted hopes of avoiding the drop with two wins in the last two weeks, came unstuck at Canterbury losing 5-1 and the crucial Essex derby between Old Loughtonians and Chelmsford ending 1-1. This results leaves Old Loughts bottom five points from safety with two games left whilst Chelmsford are three points above Poynton who occupy the play-off spot. Ipswich are also not out of danger and just one point ahead of Chelmsford after losing 4-1 at home to Slough. Their cause will not be helped by a suspension to Miriam Fabregas who was red carded for abusive language with 10 minutes to go. Intriguingly Chelmsford visit Ipswich and Poynton host Old Loughts when the league restarts in a fortnight’s time and on the last week of the season Chelmsford must travel to Poynton.
