INDIANAPOLIS - Sara Slattery has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the 2008 USA Women's 8 km Championship Saturday in Akron, Ohio.
The 2007 Pan Am Games 10,000m champion, Slattery held off a late charge by two-time USA 10 km champion Katie McGregor to win her first USA road title, covering the 8 km course in 25 minutes 54 seconds. McGregor finished second in 25:56.
Now in its seventh year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
