Serena Williams awarded wild card for AEGON International

Serena Williams will make her eagerly anticipated return to competitive tennis at the AEGON International in Eastbourne, which starts on Saturday 11th June.

The former World number one has been sidelined through injury and illness since winning the Ladies’ Singles at The Championships, Wimbledon in July last year.

But now the winner of 13 major singles titles is looking forward to making her comeback as she prepares to defend her Wimbledon title.

“I am so excited to be healthy enough to compete again,” said the four-time Wimbledon Champion. “These past twelve months have been extremely tough and character building. I have so much to be grateful for. I'm thankful to my family, friends, and fans for all of their support. Serena’s back!”

Serena Williams will join her sister, Venus, in the main draw of the AEGON International, which contains 13 of the world’s top 20 players, including the new French Open champion, Na Li.

Tournament Director, Gavin Fletcher, said: “Eastbourne has always had a huge soft spot for Serena, and people here will be absolutely thrilled that she’s back playing world class tennis, and that’s she’s chosen the grass courts of Devonshire Park as the venue for her return. Serena can be guaranteed a huge welcome when she arrives.”

The prestigious tournament, a combined ATP and WTA event, draws in a world class field each year as highly ranked players take to the grass courts ahead of The Championships, Wimbledon in London.

Daily ticket prices for the event start at £25.
